Traintime

From: Dagmar Klein <kleid000@goofy.zdv.Uni-Mainz.de> - Added 6th November 1996

This was transcribed from Peter's own manuscript (he jotted it down for Hugh to play at the Union Chapel), and all mistakes are therefore Peter's own!

C#sus4 C#min
Along the track the wires are humming

C#sus4 C#min
In bursts of code like far-off drums

D C#sus4 D C#sus4
Fathering a message Further up the line

          D C#sus4
Someone's shouting down the passage of time

C#sus4 C#min
The corridor restrains the window

C#sus4 C#min
No view without the eye (I?) within

D C#sus4 D C#sus4
Bold upon the threshold But holding on the line

D C#sus4
Shouting down the passage of time

Bbmin A C#min B
Relatives speak on the phone on the train

Abmin Ab B Bbsus4
Talking before they have thought to explain

Bbmin A C#min B
Voices pitched wildly on tracks in the night

Abmin Ab B Bbsus4
Can't pick the pace up, oh let there be light

    Ab F# E
How light becomes the soul...

C#sus4 C#min
You know yourself the centre of attention

C#sus4 C#min
You know yourself the locus of event

D C#sus4 D C#sus4
Sorry if it's painful Quarrying the lime, stage centre

D C#sus4
Shouting down the passage of time

C#sus4 C#min
The corridor retains its shadows,

its secrets compartmentalised...

damping down on ambience,

damp the teeth and grind,

shouting down the passage of time!

Bbmin A C#min B
What's there to see or make clear

Abmin Ab B Bbsus4
What's there to know when the voice is right here

Bbmin A C#min B
What's there to promise or vow

Abmin Ab B Bbsus4
What's to believe when the time is right now

Bbmin A C#min B
Relatives speak on the phone on the train

Abmin Ab B Bbsus4
Talking before they have thought to refrain

Bbmin A C#min B
Voices projecting, spears in mid-flight

Abmin Ab H Bbsus4
Frozen forever, oh let there be light!!
(and as you all know, the problem of a final chord is circumvented by a huge dissonance on the piano, at least live! A few remarks on the chorus: The C#min on the word "phone" has got an Ab as the bass note, and the Bbsus4 at the end is an educated guess of mine at a Hammill scribble. Sounds right to me, though...)
