Ferret and Featherbird

Note: this song was recorded originally for Van Der Graaf first album, "The Aerosol Grey Machine" in 1968, but it did not see the light of day 'till Peter Hammill released the remastered version on cd in 1997. "Ferret" has changed over the six years hibernation period, and gained maturity, as Hammill himself did, but the essence of this simple love song remained the same.

Intro: guitar & piano improvisations on: D, C, D, C

D C
Time has come between us:
       D C
in the passing months I've felt you slip away
        D C
as your words and mine came like nursery rhymes
               G A D
till there was nothing left to say.
                         C
Distance came between us long ago,
       D C
as our memories faded away...
G D C
over the miles I ceased to smile
        G G,A C,D
because nothing felt the same.
Interlude: D, E, F, G (x2)
G/D Dm G/D F Dm
That's how it seemed a week ago,
                    A A7, Gm/D, G/D
far off in time and space.
         D C,D C
Time and distance are between us now,
     D C
they form a bond to make things sure.
G D
Nothing ever shatters,
G D
you know what happens:
G D Bm7 C
time and distance make a love secure.
